Kuan-Hsiang Gary Huang

South Africa-at-Large, 2004
MSc in Integrated Immunology
Green College
Soon to commence studies at Oxford

Although I became a Scholar-elect at the end of 2003 for 2004, I have taken the decision of postponing my scholarship term commencement by 1 year, like many of fellow medical candidates. This gap year allowed me to complete my internship training at one of South Africa's busiest hospital - Helen Joseph and Coronation Hospital Complex. This special opportunity has also given me precious time to put a suitable pause to my junior medical career, have a more holistic resolution to my future dual career (clinical and academic), review my motives behind the scholarship application, re-organise my thoughts and plans of academic career at Oxford, as well as allowed me to have a more indepth exploration with various exciting disciplines that had grabbed me to reach a satisfactory final decision. Having been a uncertain generalist, these abovementioned processes was of immense value to me in clarify my direction after suffering graduate confusion.

I will start my studying in Oct 2005, reside at Green College and study MSc in Integrated Immunology, with likely extension into a DPhil career thereafter. Having witnessed the phenomenal support and friendliness of Rhodes community, and heard so many predecessor's overwhelming words regarding the Oxford experience, I cannot wait any further to see it and contribute to it.
